Welcome to the homepage of the Maryland Geocaching Society. The 2017 MGS Summer Picnic in Carderock Park is just around the corner, so if you haven’t yet posted your will-attend or signed up on the Volunteer and Food List, hurry up and do so! We hope you’ll enjoy us for a fun day in a great location. And if you’re looking to boost your “cache types in a day” stats, you might want to consider attending the CITO hosted by our friends in NoVAGO earlier that morning. It’s only about a 10-minute drive from the CITO to the Picnic.
Nominations are open for the 2017 MGS Awards! The dates and rules have changed this year, so be sure to read all about it in the 2017 MGS Awards Nominations thread. The awards are great way to showcase the creativity on display across the state and to recognize members who have helped raise the bar for geocaching in Maryland. In previous years, very few people have participated in the nominations and voting, but we’re hoping to stir up a lot more interest this time round. The awards have traditionally been presented at the Summer Picnic, but this year we’ve moved them back to January to give people more time to visit the nominated caches and to contemplate their Favorites lists. Visit the MGS Awards thread to find out how to nominate your favorite hiders, caches, logs, and photos.
An update on the CAM geocoin saga has been posted here. It includes a timeline of our geocoin production thus far to give everyone an idea of what sort of Keystone Cops movie this has been. Again, a tremendous THANK YOU to everyone who has been so gracious and patient with this ridiculous situation.
In an effort to ensure we don’t find ourselves in a similar predicament next year, we’ve already opened up the CAM 2018 Logo Contest. This is the first step in designing the logo which will appear on next year’s CAM geocoin and related merchandise. Design submissions are open through July 24th, and the voting will run from July 25th, with the winner being announced on August 1st. Visit the Logo Contest page to submit your design. To keep abreast of CAM 2018 info and announcements, be sure to subscribe to the CAM 2018 Information Thread.
The 2017 MGS CITO and Picnic will be held on Saturday, September 23rd, in the McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State Park from 10am to 1pm. Since this falls on the first day of Groundspeak’s second CITO Week of 2017, you will earn a souvenir by attending this CITO event! If that doesn’t boost attendance, nothing will. We hope you’ll be willing to give back to Mother Earth by picking up trash and helping with trail maintenance at this great Maryland park.
We’re happy to announce that we’ll be returning to Hancock, Maryland, for the 2017 MGS Fall Picnic on the weekend of October 14th. The picnic will be held in a different park this year, but we’ll be back at Widmyer Park for the campout on Friday and Saturday nights. Mid-October is the perfect time of year to behold Western Maryland’s beautiful fall colors, and I hope you’ll join us for one of the most enjoyable MGS events of the year.
More MGS events will be publishing soon; meanwhile, please save the dates:
• 2017 MGS Geocaching Trivia Party – Saturday, November 4th (1–4pm)
• 2017 MGS Holiday Swap – Saturday, December 2nd (Noon–3pm)
Here’s wishing you all a happy and safe Independence Day weekend!
