Cache In Trash Out

and they are off... (plus Spring CITO info)

CAM Kick-Off events across the state were well attended and excitement was in the air.  I hope everybody is enjoying themselves so far.  There were some hickups including a reception attended by the Govenor,  lots and lots of muggles, and a wet parking lot but miles were driven, geocaches were found and fun was had.  Keep at it because the picnic is right around the corner!  Something even closer than the CAM picnic is two MGS Spring CITOs!  So come out, help out and earn that new Spring 2018 CITO souvenir!  One CITO will be held in Southern Maryland, at the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary and one in Northern Maryland at the Elk Neck Arboretum.  So come out, earn your souvenir and help clean up the playing field.  See you there!

2017 MGS Fall Picnic and satellite events

Welcome to the homepage of the Maryland Geocaching Society.

The 2017 MGS Fall Picnic and Campout in Hancock, MD, will soon be upon us, so if you haven’t yet posted your will-attend or signed up on the Volunteer and Food List, please do so! In addition to the main picnic event on Saturday, October 14th, five other local events have been scheduled over the weekend:

• Early Bird Party on the Deck – Friday the 13th (6–8pm)
• 2017 MGS Fall Picnic – Saturday the 14th (10am–4pm)
Friends ’Round the Campfire – Saturday the 14th (8–9.30pm)
Sunday Morning Breakfast – Sunday the 15th (8–9am)
WMRT and C&O Canal CITO – Sunday the 15th (Noon–1pm)
A Bloody Brunch on the Deck – Sunday the 15th (1.15–2.30pm)

Saturday’s picnic will be held in Kirkwood Park, and we’ll be in Widmyer Park for the campout on Friday and Saturday nights. Mid-October is a wonderful time of year to visit Western Maryland, and we hope you’ll join us for one of the most enjoyable MGS events of the year.

If you have access to a grill you’d willing and able to transport to the picnic, please contact alzarius. The pavilion we used last year caught fire, and the park couldn’t guarantee it would be repaired in time for this year’s picnic. As far as we are aware, the new pavilion does not yet have grills installed. We can make this a “non-grillable items only” picnic if we need to, but we should make that call asap before people start buying burgers and dogs. We will announce a decision on Sunday the 8th, so if you can help out, please contact us before then.

MGS News and Upcoming Events

MGS News and Upcoming Events

Thanks to all who braved the gloomy forecast to join us for the 2016 MGS Fall Picnic! We had great autumn weather for camping, and the rain wasn’t too much of a disruption of Saturday’s events due to everyone’s good spirits. We’re very grateful to the Town of Hancock for their hospitality, and I hope we have an opportunity to return for future events. To those who couldn’t join us, we missed you, and it’s still worth a visit for the more than 30 new caches that published during that weekend.

On Saturday, November 12th, from 8am to 1.30pm, the APLCachers will present their second annual Geocaching Symposium at the JHU Applied Physics Lab, the birthplace of satellite navigation. This is a terrific event for geocachers of all levels of experience. Seminar topics include ‘Geocaching 101’ for beginners and ‘Geocaching 201’ for intermediate level cachers, ‘The History of Geocaching in Maryland’ presented by deepdish23, ‘Genesis of the Antietam Adventure Lab Cache’ by Hixon, and ‘The Future of Gadget Caches’ by WVTim. There will also be tutorials on using Geosphere (iPhone), c:geo (Android) and Project-GC. These presentations will provide valuable additions to your geo-arsenal, and we hope you’ll consider attending!

We experienced several setbacks scheduling an MGS CITO event this year, however we are pleased to announce that we have finally managed to secure a location. The 2016 MGS CITO Event and Picnic will occur on Sunday, November 20th from 1.30 to 4.30pm at the Hollofield Area of Patapsco Valley State Park. (Where’s the Hollofield Area, you ask? If you’ve found Jusef’s Cache, Maryland’s oldest active geocache, you’ve been there.) After posting your will-attend, please post your food items to the CITO Food List thread.

On Saturday, December 3rd, we return to the JHU Applied Physics Lab for the ninth annual MGS Holiday Swap from 1 to 5pm. This is one of the most enjoyable MGS events of the year, and if you’ve never been, you really should give it a try! Please visit the cache page for details and to post your will-attend, and then check out the Holiday Swap Food List to post the prepared dish you intent to bring. The APLCachers are graciously providing the use of their space to us free of charge. In return we have agreed not to sell any wares or collect donations. Any items which are ordered and paid for via PayPal ahead of time can be picked up at the event, however the MGS will not be bringing any additional merchandise to sell and will not be accepting payments of any kind.

As a reminder, the prices on our inventory of geocoins have dropped:
GeoWoodstock XIII geocoin (antique silver) — $5
 CAM 2015 geocoin — $5
CAM 2016 geocoins (silver and gold) – $10

Yes, that’s right, now you can grab GW13 and CAM15 geocoins for the same price as travel bug dog tags! To place an order, contact us at

We hope you’re having a wonderful autumn of caching and look forward to seeing you at an event soon!

Come join the Maryland Geocaching Society as we clean up the beaches of Accokeek Farm at Piscataway National Park for our CITO event. This is a great way to give back to the community. Piscataway National Park is located on the shores of the Potomac River and the way the currents run in the Potomac, trash runs up ashore on the beaches. We will be helping them get their beaches read for their Food For Thought Event held a couple weeks later. The CITO will run for 10AM-Noon with a picnic being held afterward. There will also be a couple new geocaches put out in conjunction with the CITO. If you have not already done so, please log your Will Attend at the cache page listing, GC5TTR4. There is more information on what you will need for the CITO at the following link: MGS Forum. I hope to see you there.

Maryland Geocaching Society CITO 2014

Come join the Maryland Geocaching Society as we get together and do our part for Mother Nature and help clean up Tuckahoe State Park in Queen Anne, MD.  On November 1st the MGS will host the Maryland Geocaching Society CITO 2014.

We will be some trail maintenance and some road side pick-up and trail trash pick-up around the park.  Afterwards we will have a potluck lunch.  So please bring something to share with your fellow cachers as we get together for one of caching core values of giving back.

Check us out on the MGS Forums for any additional information.
