Summer Picnic, CAM Coin Update, and Other News

Welcome to the homepage of the Maryland Geocaching Society. The 2017 MGS Summer Picnic in Carderock Park is just around the corner, so if you haven’t yet posted your will-attend or signed up on the Volunteer and Food List, hurry up and do so! We hope you’ll enjoy us for a fun day in a great location. And if you’re looking to boost your “cache types in a day” stats, you might want to consider attending the CITO hosted by our friends in NoVAGO earlier that morning. It’s only about a 10-minute drive from the CITO to the Picnic.

Nominations are open for the 2017 MGS Awards! The dates and rules have changed this year, so be sure to read all about it in the 2017 MGS Awards Nominations thread. The awards are great way to showcase the creativity on display across the state and to recognize members who have helped raise the bar for geocaching in Maryland. In previous years, very few people have participated in the nominations and voting, but we’re hoping to stir up a lot more interest this time round. The awards have traditionally been presented at the Summer Picnic, but this year we’ve moved them back to January to give people more time to visit the nominated caches and to contemplate their Favorites lists. Visit the MGS Awards thread to find out how to nominate your favorite hiders, caches, logs, and photos.

An update on the CAM geocoin saga has been posted here. It includes a timeline of our geocoin production thus far to give everyone an idea of what sort of Keystone Cops movie this has been. Again, a tremendous THANK YOU to everyone who has been so gracious and patient with this ridiculous situation.

In an effort to ensure we don’t find ourselves in a similar predicament next year, we’ve already opened up the CAM 2018 Logo Contest. This is the first step in designing the logo which will appear on next year’s CAM geocoin and related merchandise. Design submissions are open through July 24th, and the voting will run from July 25th, with the winner being announced on August 1st. Visit the Logo Contest page to submit your design. To keep abreast of CAM 2018 info and announcements, be sure to subscribe to the CAM 2018 Information Thread.

The 2017 MGS CITO and Picnic will be held on Saturday, September 23rd, in the McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State Park from 10am to 1pm. Since this falls on the first day of Groundspeak’s second CITO Week of 2017, you will earn a souvenir by attending this CITO event! If that doesn’t boost attendance, nothing will. We hope you’ll be willing to give back to Mother Earth by picking up trash and helping with trail maintenance at this great Maryland park.

We’re happy to announce that we’ll be returning to Hancock, Maryland, for the 2017 MGS Fall Picnic on the weekend of October 14th. The picnic will be held in a different park this year, but we’ll be back at Widmyer Park for the campout on Friday and Saturday nights. Mid-October is the perfect time of year to behold Western Maryland’s beautiful fall colors, and I hope you’ll join us for one of the most enjoyable MGS events of the year.

More MGS events will be publishing soon; meanwhile, please save the dates:
2017 MGS Geocaching Trivia Party – Saturday, November 4th (1–4pm)
2017 MGS Holiday Swap – Saturday, December 2nd (Noon–3pm)

Here’s wishing you all a happy and safe Independence Day weekend!

Hiker Pathtags

Hiker Pathtags

Welcome to the homepage of the Maryland Geocaching Society. Thank you again to all those who completed CAM for their ongoing patience with the coin delay. We’ve still not been given an estimated completion date from the mint, but the moment we get word from them we will post announcements here on the forum, on Bookface, and, if possible, through the archived cache page.

Meanwhile, to satisfy your cravings for shiny metal disks, there are still a few bags of MGS ‘Hiker’ pathtags in stock on the GeocoinStore site. This was a reorder of a popular design from 2011. In order to purchase these tags, you’ll need to enter a password: mgs2011 (lowercase). Each bag of 20 costs $20 plus shipping, and the MGS receives a kickback donation from each purchase.

The 2017 MGS Summer Picnic in Carderock Park is only a month-and-a-day away! If you haven’t yet posted a will-attend, please visit the cache page to do so. You can sign up to volunteer and list your potluck food items in this thread. Aside from enjoying the company of fellow cachers, there’s plenty to do and see in the area. The Carderock virtual cache is a ¾-mile hike from the Picnic Area along the Billy Goat Trail, and Aquarius – another of Maryland’s virtuals – is only a 2-mile drive to parking and a 0.6-mile hike. We hope to see you there!

2017 Summer Picnic

2017 Summer Picnic

Welcome to the homepage of the Maryland Geocaching Society. CAM 2017 has come and gone, and I extend my gratitude to everyone for being so kind and understanding about the delayed coins. We have been informed that the factory in China has been having ‘computer problems’. As soon as we have a projected delivery date from the mint, we will post announcements here on the forum and, if possible, through the cache page. Thank you again for your continued patience.

We are now looking forward to the MGS Summer Picnic on July 8th at Carderock Park. If you have not yet posted a will-attend, you can do so on the Summer Picnic cache page. The food and volunteer sign-up list can be found here. More information regarding the annual Summer Auction will follow.

And finally, safe travels to all those journeying to North Carolina for GeoWoodstock XV. Have a great time!

Congratulations to all those involved with the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area Geotrail for receiving a 2017 Maryland Preservation Award for Excellence in Public Programming from the Maryland Historical Trust. Certificates were presented to the MGS and the cache hiders at an award ceremony in Annapolis yesterday. Thanks to Mark ‘deepdish23’ Neuberger and his team for bringing statewide recognition to our organization. Read more and post comments in this thread.

CAM – Week III Update

CAM - Week III Update

We’re about 40% of the way through CAM, and it’s time for a few updates. Thanks to everyone who supported the MGS by purchasing CAM 2017 pathtags! All 1000 pathtags sold out earlier today. We will not be reordering, so if you missed the boat, you can visit the pathtag page and add it to your wishlist. The CAM picnic is less than a month away, so if you haven’t signed up on the Food & Volunteers list, please do. The Favorite CAM Cache poll and the CAM Photo Contest page have also posted.
