What are your 2012 Caching Goals?

Post by czar7 »

Well...in 2011, I set out to do two things.

1. Fill as many days as possible on my caching calendar.
2. Get 100 caches in a day.

Doing number 1 set me on a new quest. I decided to attempt to get a physical cache find on 366 consecutive days. A super streak if you will. But of course...I will finish in early February and will want to keep going to get a cache on February 29th...so I will probably end up at about 400 days. Might as well make it an even number.

Doing the streak and then adding in number 2 above, has given me my first goal for 2012. When I got the 100 in a day and while doing the streak and some other fun stuff...I will end up at around 650 or more caches this year. The most I have gotten in one calendar year. So next year my first goal is to get to 1000 caches for the year. This means I will need to average about 20 caches a week.

Oh...and doing number 1 and creating the streak also led me to do my physical cache find in 12 states in one day trick as well.

So here are my goals for 2012

1. Find 1000 caches (not all physical) in one calendar year.
2. Complete the Maryland 5 oldest Challenge.
3. Complete Pointless and Sadistic - without a team (and certainly not in one day).
4. Complete at least 2 more PUC caches.

What are your goals?

Well Let's see, my 2012 Caching Goals are:

Start and complete The Gauntlet - Beaver Creek http://coord.info/GC1XADT with my Dad in Ohio.
Finally get up the gumption to tackle some of the PUC caches, both Urban and Back Country.
Participate in and complete CAM 2012. First CAM I have decided to participate in.
Find a cache at each port of call on our cruse in April 2012.
Meet more Geocachers and make some new friends.
Get my 8 year old Daughter more into Geocaching.
Go caching more and most of all, HAVE FUN!!

I have thought about starting a streak but have not decided on that one yet.

That's about it for now.

Honestly, my goals aren't quite that big for the new year, but getting in the spirit of things:

1. Find a cache on February 29, no matter how sick and tired I am, and fill in as many of the other calendar days as possible
2. Finish the Maryland's 5 Oldest Challenge.
3. Finish the MD/DE Delorme (I've already finished the DE Delorme this past weekend, just have to find the final)
4. Finish off the county ADC challenges I'm still working on
5. CAM (if life doesn't get in the way again)
6. Slow down and enjoy the scenery a bit more

Following filling in the calendar on February 29th :anxious:, I'm considering 'attempting' a 365 day slump (To be honest, I'm ready for a break  and yes, I also realize that would involve missing CAM). That is to say, focus on the non-finding to-do list that has piled up during the past year - hides, challenges, hosting the puzzle event , etc.
-remember when QotM used to be a thing?

My goals for this new year of 2012 are:

1. try to get one cache everyday of the year
2. definitely get a cache February 29!
3. publish a new cache every twice weeks (not all evil)
4. complete CAM 2012
5. meet new people and gain new caching partners
6. complete the SSB GeoTrail
7. complete the Capt John Smith GeoTrail
8. get all of the caches on Tangier Island

I think that's more than enough to try for one year!

We have very specific goals that will be hard to accomplish but we will work at it.
1) DNF one cache everyday of the year
2) definitely DNF a cache February 29!
3) DNF the complete CAM 2012.

See you all on the trail and no hints please!
One can learn something new everyday while geocaching if one isn't carefull.

Without consulting my better half, these are what I know we're gunning for:

1. Finish our 366 day streak in June. Then take a BREAK!
2. Complete MD 5 Oldest
3. Attend our first ever CAM!
4. Geowoodstock??? Maybe!
5. Finish the MD/DE Delorme challenge
6. Get our 1000th find, before April 26th, our 1 year of caching "birthday"
7. Host our first event! Tentatively set to be at the Bengies Drive-In
8. Get http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... wp=GC1DM36!
9. Get ONE (at least) PUC cache. One!
10. Finish the MD Top Ten (favorites) challenge

A busy year to be sure!

I never had any goals for 2011, but it was an eventful year:

1) Found my 2,000th cache
2) Attended GeoWoodstock
3) Captain John Smith Trail and Wicomico Geocache Dash
4) 10 cache types in a day
5) Many more little things that made it a great year

For 2012, there are already lots of plans already in place:

1) CAM
2) ET Highway in April
3) GeoWoodstock in May
4) Finalize GeoWoodstock bid for Maryland
5) Find more caches in our home states of Louisiana and Mississippi on our Christmas vacation
6) Possibly find cache #5,000 (if the we do good on the ET and some other trails)
7) and many more

Our goals for 2012:

1. Get more than 1,000 caches in a year (ET trail should do that for us)
2. Complete CAM
3. Fill in the last three days we need on the calendar (three early days in February that we missed last year due to wedding planning, a string of DNFs in Puerto Rico, and a day at sea on our honeymoon cruise)
4. Finish the Frederick County ADC and start looking at the Carroll County ADC
5. Finish the Top 10 Favorites
6. Really start working on the 5 Oldest Challenge
7. Attend two Mega Events (Geowoodstock and Mid-West Geobash)
8. Find our 100th Virtual
9. Add 5 or more states to our states cached in list
10. Get at least 2 Earthcaches published
11. Get at least 20 other caches published, including a few events

2012 goals are fairly simple......kind of like us

Do CAM because I love it.

Figure out how to get to Geowoodstock because I love that too.

Try not to loose my GPS (especially in the house)

Attempt to find a cache on Feb 29th

And mostly, enjoy caching with friends while making new ones.

My hard number goals for the year are

1. Complete CAM 2012 (and manage to keep the picnic weekend free so I can attend it)
2. Hit find 2000 with a stretch goal of 2500
3. Fill in Feb 29th on the calendar
4. Get to 200 found days of the year (sitting at ~140 right now)
5. Keep my hide count to find count at least at 1 to 100
6. Get a find in Aug 04 and Sept 03
7. Get finds in my other 10 MD counties I am missing (hopefully during the CAM run)

Soft number goals

1. Fill in more of the 2000 and 2001 months that I am missing
2. Add more of the North East States
3. Get on the water and find some paddle caches now that I have the kayaks
4. More hikes!
5. Captain John Smith Trail Finish it and visit more of them
6. Dig through the ? caches around and find the ones that are challenges rather than puzzles and find the ones I qualify for and work on the ones I don't
7. Find a 5/X and a X/5 cache or few

Quite some goals listed here!

For me:

29th Feb... thinking of finding at least 1 cache in MD, WV, PA, DE, AND VA on that day. Or, that might be too much driving.

More kayaking. More hiking. More climbing. IOW, higher terrain.

Hide new caches...!

Spend a lot less time solving puzzles. 8O Actually I really mean less time TRYING to but NOT solving puzzles. Or do I?

Travel to cool awesome scenic locations and cache.

I have said that my goal were, and continue to be to have fun geocaching. Everything else is just gravy on top.

That said...

- I'd like to fill in as many holes in my calendar as possible. Most definitely including Feb 29th!
- If I succeed in the above, I might even be able to have a streak over my current high... 6. ;-)
- I'd like to fill in more of my D/T grid. I probably won't catch up to my boss (he only has 7 D/T's left to get) but can at least try to keep him on his toes.
- I'd like to get (rent, or maybe even buy) a kayak so I can start doing some water based geocaches. That'll help with the D/T mentioned above!
- Get some more of the ancient caches. The Spot (http://coord.info/GC39) is only a 30 mile detour off my route to Toronto this spring. And Jusef keeps taunting me...
- Try a CAM cache or two. Doubt I'd be able to do the full CAM, but now that I have a shiny MD driver's license saying I'm a real MD resident, I should at least give it more than a cursory glance. ;-)

To resurrect this thread and see how people did at completing them and what additional ones came up during the year.

Here is my list of goals and how it went

My hard number goals for the year are

1. Complete CAM 2012 (and manage to keep the picnic weekend free so I can attend it)
Completed it on the opening weekend with PaddleAway and made it to the event and had a great time

2. Hit find 2000 with a stretch goal of 2500
Gave up on this one after working on a 100 day streak. Ended up the year at 1697

3. Fill in Feb 29th on the calendar
I will not have to wait another 4 years to claim the 366 challenge. I racked up a bunch of finds including some old ones

4. Get to 200 found days of the year (sitting at ~140 right now)
Up and over on this one. Ran up to 253 at the end up the year.

5. Keep my hide count to find count at least at 1 to 100
30 hides to 1700 finds.

6. Get a find in Aug 04 and Sept 03
Filled in both months an then some.

7. Get finds in my other 10 MD counties I am missing (hopefully during the CAM run)
Only filled in 3 additional counties this year. The CAM caches didn't fall far enough outside of the counties I already had.

Soft number goals

1. Fill in more of the 2000 and 2001 months that I am missing
This one went well. 2001 is all colored in. And I have 3 of the 2000 months filled in. I am just missing June, July, August, October and November 2000 for the single Jasmer. There are a lot more to fill to get the double.

2. Add more of the North East States
Never made it to New England this year. The only new state for the year was Deleware as I skirted through durring CAM

3. Get on the water and find some paddle caches now that I have the kayaks
Racked up 14 paddle cache finds for the year. Placed 2 new ones and replaced a lost cache with a new dive cache. That made 4 different trips out on the water hunting

4. More hikes!
I should have made a list of these as I went along. I did more hiking but I know I would have liked to do more. Next year maybe a goal of 1 hiking or boating trip a month!

5. Captain John Smith Trail Finish it and visit more of them
I didn't find any new CJS caches this year. I never found myself in the right area for them by accident and never made a dedicated trip to work on it.

6. Dig through the ? caches around and find the ones that are challenges rather than puzzles and find the ones I qualify for and work on the ones I don't
I knocked off 37 Mystery caches for the year. 12 of them were Challenge caches.

7. Find a 5/X and a X/5 cache or few
I found 3 caches with a 5 difficulty for the year
I clocked in 17 new 5 terrain caches for the year
One of the caches was my first ever 5/5

Additional Goals that I set and finished during the year
I found a cache a day for 100 days.
PA DeLorme Challenge. I went from 35 pages left down to 8 pages.
I rolled over the 50 Virtual finds mark this year
I had a FTF a month for 11 months in a row and lost the streak because I was out of town for most of the month of November.

Ahhh...

... 29 Feb, ahhh, I discarded the multiple state idea and would have liked to find 29 but I only managed to find 3. The pouring rain did me in, darn it.

Kayaking, yep, did a bunch! Was fun! Hiking, hmmm, some... climbing, well, not really.

I hid a few new caches.

Spend less time solving puzzles? Ahhh, well, NO, I don't think so! It took me months to solve 50 puzzles at/near Rehoboth Beach. That was a nice trip. Other than that I didn't do much traveling although I did visit Shenandoah National Park for my 100th EC find. And, before the trip to Rehoboth (which added close to 50 micro finds), I did get my find count on regular sized caches higher than micro sized caches to qualify for and find the Regular Challenge.

- I'd like to fill in as many holes in my calendar as possible. Most definitely including Feb 29th!
I managed to completely fill in my calendar! Woot! I also managed to fill in the "Cache placed on..." calendar too.
- If I succeed in the above, I might even be able to have a streak over my current high... 6. ;-)
Managed to go for 70 days in a row, thanks to the very mild winter. If I had started earlier, I could have gone for 100 days. As it was, Passover was looming, and I wouldn't be able to cache then. I'm satisfied!
- I'd like to fill in more of my D/T grid. I probably won't catch up to my boss (he only has 7 D/T's left to get) but can at least try to keep him on his toes.
I don't remember how many D/Ts I had at the beginning of 2012, but I know I got a few more D/Ts. (and lost one when a CO changed the rating)
- I'd like to get (rent, or maybe even buy) a kayak so I can start doing some water based geocaches. That'll help with the D/T mentioned above!
Got an inflatable kayak and got a few water caches. Hope to do even more!
- Get some more of the ancient caches. The Spot (http://coord.info/GC39) is only a 30 mile detour off my route to Toronto this spring. And Jusef keeps taunting me...
Got "The Spot" and "Jusef."
- Try a CAM cache or two. Doubt I'd be able to do the full CAM, but now that I have a shiny MD driver's license saying I'm a real MD resident, I should at least give it more than a cursory glance. ;-)
No luck on this one yet.

Only goal I have for 2013 is to work on more D/Ts. I'm not setting up any hard goals, as I'm applying for grad school, and thus need to give that my focus.

4. Finished the Frederick County ADC, but didn't really do much with Carroll County ADC.
5. Finished and found on September 15th
6. Didn't get too into that goal, but grabbed a handful that we needed
7. We attended both of those event and a third Mega (Hampton Road's 10th Anniversary)
8. We found our 100th Virtual on the Vegas Strip
9. We added 8 new states to our list (CA, NV, AZ, WI, MI, IL, IN, KY)
10. Sadly, we still have not gotten an Earthcache published
11. We placed 15 published caches in 2012
