2017 MGS Geocaching Trivia Party

2017 MGS GEOCACHING TRIVIA PARTY

Celebrate the Maryland Geocaching Society's  100th EVENT  by joining us for an afternoon of socializing and pub-style trivia at the 2017 MGS Geocaching Trivia Party on Saturday, November 4th, at the Desert Rose Sweet Shop in Williamsport, MD. Teams of 2–6 will compete in a lighthearted competition of geocaching knowledge, both general and Maryland-specific. Geocaching-themed prizes will be awarded to the three highest-scoring teams.

The doors will open at 12.30pm and the trivia will begin at 1.30pm. Trivia should run less than two hours with the event ending at 4pm. Food and drink will be available to purchase. All are invited, and you do not need to participate in the trivia contest or purchase food to attend the event. The venue is kid-friendly, however children must be accompanied by an adult.

Feel free to post in this thread to organize teams! But don't worry if you don't have a team formed ahead of time; teams can be formed on the spot before trivia begins. If you haven’t already done so, please log your will-attend so we can get a rough idea of how many folks to expect.

GAMEPLAY
The trivia contest consists of four main rounds, each round covering a specific category of five questions. (Two of the four categories will be "Groundspeak" and "GeoWoodstock".) There will also be a half-time paper round (a handout sheet with "fill-in-the-blank" or "matching" type questions), a bonus "6-4-2" question after Round 3 (answering the question with only one hint earns 6 points, answering with two hints earns 4 points, three hints earns 2), a final question and, if necessary, tie-breaker questions.

THREE EVENTS AND A SOUVENIR!
November 4th will be a busy day for geocachers along the I-81/WV-9 corridors. Within a half-hour drive of this trivia event, GR8caches will be hosting two events, one of which will earn you the 2017 GIFF souvenir for your profile! Want to attend all three events? We think you should! Here's the schedule:
  • 10.00–11.15am: 8th Annual Hike/Bike Trail Event (GC7BCZZ)
  • 1.00–4.00pm: MGS Geocaching Trivia Party (GC782F6) — the trivia portion will probably end around 3pm
  • 4.30–7.00pm: GIFF, Film and Food (GC7A6ZR) — the films start at 5.30pm
POST UPDATED ON 30 OCT:
Due to the small number of will-attends, we have moved this event from the Williamsport Moose Lodge to the Desert Rose Sweet Shop. This will save the MGS the cost of rental for a large space we do not need. The new venue seats about 30 people.

Our triviameister, Deepdish Trebek, has supplied a few sample questions to give us an idea what to expect at Saturday’s trivia event:
  1. The first official summer picnic for the MGS was held in 2003. At which park was the picnic held?
  2. How many of the current MGS officers have been an MGS officer previously in another postion?
  3. Name either the US state or the country in which either of the remaining APE caches are located? 2 point bonus if you can name both.
  4. The first geocache ever placed in the state of Maryland - placed in September of 2000 but never found – was located in what State Park?
(These questions will NOT be used at the event. Answers will be posted tomorrow.)

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the first of what we hope will be an annual MGS Geocaching Trivia event. We're grateful to the generous folks at GxProxy for donating a veritable treasure trove of geocaching merchandise to award as prizes for the event. Thanks also to past president deepdish23 for supplying the questions and emceeing the competition. If you weren't able to attend, we soon will post the questions here in this thread to give you an idea what you missed.
