Here it is a New Year. And again elections have brought a new set of Core Members without palace revolutions, hostile takeovers or falling off an Old Line State cliff. Congratulations to the New Core! Happy New Years Everyone!

In the interest of transparency, the Core have voted to have this year's vote tally posted along with the results. This is something that we will expect to post each year to show how your participation works and that it is an important component of the MGS! Since 4 of the 5 positions ran unopposed, only the one position with two nominees are shown:

64 total votes

WVKiwi - 30 votes
decafsaysmoof - 34 votes

Thanks to everyone that cast their vote - and congrats again to the 2013 MGS officers!

Hmmmmm, Only 64 people voted? I would have thought that well over a 100 would have voted. considering how many members there are. Hopefully having the election #s published from now on will bring out more voters!

It is unremarkable that so few MGS members voted, given that all but one office was uncontested. I suspect some/many (?) did not vote at all due to the election landscape. In addition, bullet#2 of the voting instructions ("Please include the candidates running unopposed when you vote.") may have been a 'turn-off' to a vibrant electorate who look for choices, platforms and dialogue each year. Further, and again according to the instructions, had a member cast a vote for the contested office only, and not casting votes for the unopposed, that vote may (?) not have been counted.

Publishing elections results is a good idea. The results, however, will not turn out the vote. Alternatives and the lively exchange of ideas among candidates and membership will.

This club/group mimics a LOT of my ham radio group in this arena. When I was president for three years, we had about 250-270 members (it was a paid membership). For a long time, most positions (both before my leadership and after) did not get contested. I think I did have to run against someone one year, but almost never.

Most nothing will change in this group unless some big shake up occurs. Granted, most likely don't see a need to change much. Hell...I'm the one always making waves and I don't see need to change much. But when a group like this is such that only a tiny bit of people do 90% of the work, then it'll continue. So until either a few major people move away, die, get burned out, or go crazy....There will be a long time of seeing unopposed elections, and things staying pretty much the same. It's just how these things work.
