Looking at GPS units is overwhelming. What equipment do I absolutely need to start? What is a good GPS unit to start with?

Your phone is sufficient to start. Android uses c:Geo, and iPhone uses cachley (I think)

Yes, Cachly on iPhone is fantastic, and costs $5. Though, I'd recommend just starting with the free, official geocaching app, which is just fine. Later, if you really fall in deep with the hobby, grab one of the better 3rd-party apps like Cachly.

GPSr's are great for areas with terrible cell signal, are tougher to break than your phone, and generally make the geocaching experience feel more like an exotic adventure. But they're not cheap, and come with their own level of fussiness (you have to specifically load the geocaches you want onto the device, etc).
