I have a government mandated holiday coming up on October 9th and I was thinking of tackling the WNW (Westminster to New Windsor) Geotrail (http://coord.info/GC72J5F) in Carroll County by bike. Does anyone else want to dust off their two-wheelers (or big tricycle if that's your thing) and join me for a day of caching?

Here are the proposed details:

Date: Monday October 9th
Time: 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM
Meeting spot: TBD - need to talk to the CO about parking

Post here if you're interested.

I have a doctor's post-surgical appointment on the 25th of this month. If he clears me, I would love to join you. I went to school at Western Maryland College many decades ago, so it'll be like old home week (with the emphasis on old). My wife bought a new bike for me last Christmas for the express purpose of trail riding in search of Geocaches, but, to date, it hasn't left my closet yet. 8O

Is there a place in PG county named Winchester that has a biking geotrail too?

If so, that's not the trail I'm thinking of. I'm planning on doing the Westminster to New Windsor Trail up in Carroll County. I recently solved all 30+ puzzles and could use some skilled cachers to help me find them and the 4 bonus caches that go along with it.

We are talking about the same trail (look back at your puzzle answers). I have also solved the 33 puzzles and will fudge it to fit in with the skilled cachers :D
It looks like parking would be at the Walmart or Baugher's.

Gah! Sorry! It's too early and the caffeine hasn't kicked in yet. I'll be sure to be plenty caffeinated on the 9th!

Ummm, Baugher's, yumm. They have the best Apple pie anywhere, and their chicken livers are to die for as well.

Now you see that? That's the difference between a government contractor and a government civilian! You call it "government mandated holiday" and I just call it a "government holiday." It's all the sweeter because neither my wife's office nor my daughter's high school gets the day off. It's truly a magic day for me.

I might join in. A bunch of us are spending the weekend at Deep Creek Lake, so it depends on when we get back. Also depends on solving a bunch of puzzles. Also depends on figuring out if my tires have dry-rotted since the last time I got on my bike.

Nomaland and myself biked this WNW trail this pst weekend. We parked one truck near the first two caches (grocery store parking lot) and the other truck near the last cache. You can park within 100 feet of #33 safely. Start at number one and ride back. Wait until the end of the day to hit the bonus caches and I wouldn’t recommend riding to them on a bike. The road is very busy and dangerous in a few places on the shoulder.

I might be able to attend this as well. I should take a look at the puzzles to make sure I can solve though. I suck at puzzle caches! ;-)

Unfortunately I haven't put a hitch receiver on the new van yet, otherwise I'd be able to lug 4 bikes from one point to another if we were to leave vehicles at the start/stop. But I can take a bunch of people.

I'm so glad there's so much interest in this cache outing!

If everyone could send me a PM with your e-mail address, either here or on GC.com, I'll compile a list and we'll start doing the logistical planning offline.

To you CDC (Columbus Day Caching, not Center for Disease Control) bikers taking on the WNW Trail:

My thanks and best wishes to you all for taking on this little challenge! For sure you will want to bike FROM Westminster and TOWARD New Windsor, since all but one of the 33 caches are on the west side of RT 31 (it'd be both inconvenient and dangerous to keep crossing the road, though the highway is not busy by most standards). Of the 3 parking areas mentioned, the one that makes the most sense is the shopping center where there is a Safeway (Starbucks inside!) and a Subway. Of course you could park at Baugher's (probably the upper lot, so as not to create a problem for the senior citizens visiting the restaurant). And it would be a short bike ride up the hill to WNW 1 from Baugher's. There's also an elusive hide at Baugher's that is not part of the WNW Trail.

Nighhawk700, you will not suck at THESE puzzles! I'd recommend solving all 33 before traveling to the trail, of course; and I'd recommend using the Web to discover the answers to the questions--though you COULD just guess what the answers are (but you'll explode the Certitude counter if you do that, probably, and thus make subsequent cachers think these puzzles are way more difficult than they really are). More importantly, you won't learn as much about these two towns if you don't track down the info on the Web. As for WNW 34-37, PLEASE read about those puzzles BEFORE you leave home. You may want to bring along a couple of TsOTT. Or one among you might be able to use methods honed by ProgKing. I concur that you will almost certainly not want to BIKE to 34-37.

A few of the caches have been revised since original publication, so you might want to make sure everything still checks out. I'd call your attention to 29, in particular, because the apparent disappearance of the original container led to my moving the replacement at least 100'. (The original container parts eventually showed up AFTER I'd placed a new container.) WNW 30 has not moved, but the type of container and the appropriate hint have changed as of yesterday. WNW 2 underwent similar changes within a week of publication, thanks to the pilfering of the cute container, so if you've heard rumors about the nature of that hide, be sure they are based on the current situation.

Again, I wish you success. It's certainly feasible to find all 37 caches in one day, but it is also quite an achievement. I can't imagine that you won't be able to solve the 3 anagrams you need for 34-36, but if you need help of any kind, feel free to call, text, email, or GCmsg me (410-446-6401). Be safe! Have fun!

Phos4s/Bob

Last call for anyone interesting in participating in our Cache-lumbus Day bike outing on the WNW Trail!

If you're interested, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll be sure to include you on the planning e-mails.
