News, Updates, and More MGS Events!

Welcome to the homepage of the Maryland Geocaching Society.

It was great seeing so many of you at this year’s Summer Picnic in Carderock Park! We lucked out with some great weather, and it proved to be an enjoyable location. Once again the MGS showed it knows how to throw down an impressive spread of food, and kudos to our master grillers who had all the food cooked in record time. No long food queues at this event! Thank you to those who donated all the wonderful items for the auction and to everyone who bid so generously. Red Hat Promos deserves a mention for their considerable donation of merchandise for the auction. If you saw something you liked but weren’t lucky enough to win the item in the auction, you can probably find it on their website. They are very accommodating with special requests, so if you’d like a design tweaked a bit, just mention it in the comment box at checkout. Many items are made-to-order, so there’s a good chance they’ll be able to make it the way you want it. If you do order from them, be sure to thank them for their donations to the Summer Auction!

Voting for the CAM 2018 Logo Contest has ended and the winner has been announced: congratulations drumbum14! A big thank you to those who submitted designs and to everyone who turned up to vote! To stay up-to-date with CAM 2018 info and announcements, be sure to subscribe to the CAM 2018 Information Thread.

Speaking of CAM, the 2017 CAM Geocoin Production Timeline has been updated with a few more nuggets of dismay. I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that the mint now refers to our coin as ‘The Haunted Project’. (Yeah, I didn’t laugh either.) Once again, thank you for being so patient with this mess.

We’ll soon be ready to reveal our plans for the MGS 15th Anniversary geocoin and begin taking orders (no egg-throwing, please). We’re taking bets on whether this new order arrives before the six-month-old CAM coin order.

Nominations are open for the 2017 MGS Awards which you can read all about in the 2017 MGS Awards Nominations thread. The awards are great way to showcase the creativity on display across the state and to recognize members who have helped raise the bar for geocaching in Maryland. Visit the MGS Awards thread to find out how to nominate your favorite hiders, caches, logs, and photos. Nominations are open through the end of 2017, and voting will begin on January 1st, 2018.

We haven’t forgotten about the MGS license plates! Many of you have expressed interest, and we are in the process of getting the artwork updated. If you are thinking about getting a set of MGS plates for your geomobile, visit this thread to sign up.

The 2017 MGS CITO and Picnic will be held on Saturday, September 23rd, in the McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State Park from 10am to 1pm. Since this falls on the first day of Groundspeak’s second CITO Week of 2017, you will earn a souvenir by attending this CITO event! We hope you’ll join us in showing how much Maryland geocachers love and appreciate our state parks.

We return to Hancock for the 2017 MGS Fall Picnic and Campout on the weekend of October 14th. Saturday’s picnic will be held in Kirkwood Park, and we’ll be back at Widmyer Park for the campout on Friday and Saturday nights. The park supervisors have promised to have the bears well fed before our arrival. Mid-October is a wonderful time of year to visit Western Maryland, and I hope you’ll join us for one of the most enjoyable MGS events of the year.

The 2017 MGS Geocaching Trivia Party is scheduled for Saturday, November 4th from 1–4pm at the Williamsport Moose Lodge. Some of you may recall that we hosted a Trivia Event the same day as the 2016 CAM Picnic. That event was planned out of logistical necessity, but it proved so popular that we’ve decided to stage another one this year as a standalone event. Who knows, it might be a CAM coin distribution event this year as well. (Seriously, stop with the eggs!)

And finally, the 2017 MGS Holiday Swap will take place on Saturday, December 2nd from Noon to 3pm at the Glen Burnie VFW Post 160. Last year’s updated rules were well-received, so we’re using them again this year. This one is always a fun time, so we hope you’ll take a break from your busy December schedules to join us in cranking up the festive spirit!
