Trip to Florida

Post by MersonMonkeys »

Me and the family will be heading to Florida (if you know my family and see my kids - DON'T tell them anything about our trip, it's a secret surprise).

We are taking plenty of time to drive down to Florida and plan on doing plenty of Geocaching.

My question is... Anyone have any suggestions on caches we should be getting? Anything great you suggest or have something on your bucket list?

We have the CAA caches on the must do list already.

Thanks in advance!

Christmas cache is cool too. A very adventurous walk. The alligator highway goes right by it in the southern part of the state. I saw gators in the wild just off the highway while caching. It was super cool. Definitely worth the trip if you have time.

If your in the Tampa/Clearwater area, one of my favorite caches is Travel Bug Plaza Hotel & Suites (GC3JQQ1). This also tanks in the top 25 in the USA.

Again, if Tampa/Clearwater area, recommend just about any caches by the CacheMedics. Believe they own the TB hotel previously mentioned. They do a lot of nice work, innovative and creative caches worth pursuing.

Additionally Owasso Shalom https://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_d ... 5ed0c6481b is a personal favorite, and not exceptionally far (maybe an hour?) from Legoland if you are down that way, but otherwise pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Read the description carefully, there are those who might prefer not to do this sort of cache with their children.

This virtual (It's all Downhill From Here....) is an amusing one and in a nice spot: https://coord.info/GC7199

"Pet Cemetery" (https://coord.info/GC2TVRQ) was also a most delightful find, and would be a fun one to take the kids to at night. I found a cacher who'd fainted at GZ for this one, but that's a story for another time.

There are three virtuals, a web cam and an earthcache in Key West, as well as a number of other traditional hides. One of these is the cache that is furthest south in the contiguous United States (I believe Hawaii has caches further south). If you are headed that far south, you might as well take the ferry west and go over and grab the one on Dry Tortugas as well.

Anyway, some food for thought all over the state.

Don't forget to consider alligators, snakes, mosquitos and spiders in your trip planning considerations!

Not sure of your route. Lpyankeefan and I found these on the way to Going Caching in 2015.

WTC Memorial, https://coord.info/GCBE9A
Draper, One Old Mountain, https://coord.info/GC2FYAA
Draper Valley, https://coord.info/GC5CPK7
Noria, https://coord.info/GCAE7E
Octopus Garden, https://coord.info/GC70

I would search for virtuals, webcams and earthcaches. And then of course, the older the better.

If your travel plans take you on I-95 south, I understand that WVTim and a Caroliner cacher placed gadget caches in or near South of the Border back in 2016. If that it a planned stop down or back, they maybe fun.

I highly recommend Christmas Cache (GCFA). I doubt you'll have the same issues with flooding i had when i was there, but you might want to read about my visit for a few examples of stupid things NOT to do. Have a great trip!

Hey,
This is a trip we have taken many times over the years. Assuming you are doing that town in the middle, Orlando, there are several that we can recommend.

On the way down, if you want to get a bunch of early caches (year 2000), take a day around Lake Lanier, near Atlanta. It's off of the standard I95 path but it is a great day. Rent a pontoon boat and cruise the lake from cache to cache. GC1D (Beaver Cache, June 2000), GC20 (Marooned, July 2000), GC21 (Lake Lanier, Aug 2000) and others.

Octopus Garden GC70 in North Carolina is from Sep 2000.

Another recommended activity is the SpaceCoast GeoTour, on the Atlantic, around Cape Canaveral. There is a coin involved and you finish at an actual geocaching store. https://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/vi ... 44faf302b2 gets you to a bookmark list. There is also a webcam at GCJT79 (Pt. Canaveral Web Cam).

Around Orlando, there are a bunch of virtuals (15) - GC4F78, GCD6F8. and some in the Parks. There are a bunch of earthcaches and letterboxes all over the area. There's a fun Wherigo (GC1Y3HH) at Downtown Disney. There is a challenge cache (GC5AK8Y) for finding all of the 7 Disney caches.
a bunch of challenge caches that can be searched on easily.

If you like challenge caches, you can find a ton around Orlando and along the Space Coast.

Be safe! As mentioned, the fauna can be hazardous - watch your step and don't stick your hand in any places that have not been checked!

Enjoy the fun and your family!

My suggestions are for South Florida.

I'd suggest Christmas Cache https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCF ... e4424fbd5a. You should probably use plenty of bug spray though, because it's rainy season and the mosquitos will be plentiful.

There's also a webcam in Boca Raton that is cool. https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCP ... ark-webcam
