I saw 0072 - czar7 on the beltway a few months ago on the way to work. Caught up and waved like a nut but was not recognized in my 0001. Guess he was in commuter mode.

How'd that happen I wonder!!!???
When I started the license plate program, I was told they pressed the plates in lots of 50. You could request a number within the current 50 if it isn't taken. I imagine that is how DeepCreekLocal got #100. If someone turns in their plate, it is not reissued or restamped, there is a gap.

I got a plate off the top of the pile last year and it was 0090 so 0100 should have been close to
coming up.

Do your current plates have to be from Maryland to have the MGS license plate?

Ummm, your car must be registered in Maryland, which typically means you already have tags, but there is always a work around where you get it all in one day

Almost had to chalk this one hop as a DNF. A few lessons learned for the next seeker of MGS plates:
1 - If you've not been to the Glen Bernie version of the MVA, it is there HQ. There are different buildings for different purposes. For this purpose, you'll need to go to building "A". If you park round the back and enter for that side, when you enter, there will be a big sign telling you to get in line to get a ticket; you'll get no service without that. Like a good little robot I got in line behind the other 47 people in front of me, and 33 minutes later got to the front, only to be told I didn't need to be in that line, I needed to go upstairs to desk 104. Didn't need a ticket.
2 - So go down the hall and up the escalator on the right. Turn left when you come off of the escalator, and you can't miss it, there's the cache! A big-(bleep) sign with 104 on it, and a wall of specialty plates (except the MGS plate which is not on that wall?!?
3 - Like anything else with the MVA, have all your paperwork in order (all you really need is the form that Tazscouter sent you, all filled out, and your driver's license). And 25 simoleans.
I'll spare you the rest of the trials and tribulations I went through, as those issues should be resolved by the time the next person heads over there. Suffice it to say that I lost two and a half hours of my life getting MGS plates today that I won't get back. Note that then plates you have on your car are good until midnight, so you don't have to change them out then and there if you don't want to. Also note that you have 30 days to turn in the old plates. Get a receipt when you do. Trust me, it will save you some serious (bleep) pain later on.
I did ask (three different employees by the way), and you can't pick your desired number, they just give you the next one in the stack. At leafs those three employees do.
At any rate, the Geocaching Expeditionary Vehicle (
http://coord.info/TB7JVWC is now sporting MGS 0094!

Heck zekester, that sounds like quite the ordeal.
I don't remember any details, but getting my MGS plates was quick and painless. I'd like to know how Deep Creek Local got #100! Perhaps there's some pick-your-number-friendly employees in Western MD?

I never returned my old plates. Was I supposed to? They never told me to, so. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes return your plates or a lot serious problems will head your way. I just went through it and plus I didn't get a receipt which added more wood to the fire.
Sorry about that whole dilemma. We will work to get it resolved. Still very strange.

Maryland law requires that you return your plates. The pertinent information can be found here:
http://www.mva.maryland.gov/about-mva/i ... 00-04T.htm
This becomes more critical when you cancel the insurance on a vehicle. All vehicles registered in Maryland (as in most states) are required to be insured. If you cancel insurance, but don't turn in the plates, the state starts fining you for having an uninsured vehicle. We learned this lesson when we totaled a car. Cancelled the insurance, junked the car, transfered the title to the insurance company turned and turned in the plates within 30 days, all is good right? Nope. Computer glitch showed that we still had the plates, so they started fining us for having an uninsured car.
This is why it is important to keep the receipt for turning in the plates. You then have their own bureaucracy to throw back at 'em.

OIC, thanks! It is strange they don't ask you to return old plates when you get specialty plates.

I wanted to thank Zekester for his license plate walk thru; it saved me considerable time and aggravation.
One other thing I found out is that there is a MD Specialty plate for "Geo-Institute of the Maryland Section ASCE" as they tried to give me one of their plates first!
I obtained MGS0095 the other day.
