Cunningham Falls Trip - November 21st

Post by deepdish23 »

A tentative date has been scheduled for Saturday November 21st for a trek in Cunningham Falls State Park. The plan is to grab the following challenge caches:

GC16QQZ - Well Rounded Maryland Cacher (The Fizzy Challenge)
GC1ABNA - Frederick County ADC Challenge
GC13ER9 - The Maryland All Counties Challenge

There are also several other caches up there but these three are the main goal. For those that have not cached at Cunningham Falls the trail up to where those caches are is fairly challenging for those of us that are not in the best of shape. Since I will be going, you will not have to worry of being left behind. If you are interested in joining the expedition, you can post a reply and we will update with more information when the date approaches.

Asked my wife - so far, so good. It's on my calendar! Hopefully, it can stay.

We are eligible for 2 of the 3 challenges listed plus others. Haven't been to the Falls for a while and have been trying to figure an excuse to get there to chase these down. Going with a team is a great excuse.

Looking forward to the fun! Thanks for the opportunity.

Ok, I should be able to do this. I'm hoping to make the md county challenge my 1000th, so I have some work to do before then. Is the Cats Eye cache on this trail?

Yes -- Cat's Eye is on the same trail.

I'm hoping to do the Fizzy Challenge for my 2000th.. but won't get there by 11/21. Plus, I have to somehow find a 4/4.5 before I qualify. :D

I'll likely be heading up there sometime in late January or early February. Hope all the snow we're supposed to get this winter, holds off for a bit.

I only qualify for one at the moment but I plan on making the trip. The day is free and let's hope it remains that way.

I'm planning to make this. I qualify for 2 of them, and have for some time. I'm very close on the Fizzy as well, so want to put my ink on that while up there. Where do you plan to meet - Cat Rock trailhead, or by the lake?
Difficult paths often lead to beautiful places.

Cat Rock trailhead on rte 77 is by far the better choice to meet!

Actually, it depends on what you mean by the lake... parking near Old Misery trailhead on Catoctin Hollow Rd would be an option.

For anyone who wants to carpool from Frederick, we can meetup at the Frederick GeoBreakfast event, GC66748, and go from there. ZiPani is right off of Highway 15 and is only fifteen minutes from Cunningham Falls Park.

One of the traditionals there suggests parking on catoctin, near the lake. I don't know how feasible that is. That being said, anyone from the east going? I'm in bowie and am willing to drive or be driven. Or go to the breakfast event.

The Parking we will use is at N 39° 37.561 W 077° 26.437. For those that are concerned that they will be hiking too slow for others, I will be leaving GeoApps event about a half hour early to head to Cunningham Falls to start the hike up to the ridge a little early. The plan is everyone will meet at

GC1AC87 - Misery Loves Company at the top of the ridge, and we will then head to the Challenge caches from there.

Hi, I am planning to join the group for this trip. I qualify for the Fizzy and the All Counties also.
I'll be coming from Pennsylvania.

I'm glad to be able to meet up because I am not familiar with this park! Right now I am planning to meet you all at the Misery Loves Company cache.

Just in case I don't make it to the breakfast event, what time would be reasonable to arrive at Misery Loves Company to catch the group?

Looking forward to the challenge and the company.

I would guess we will meet up at Misery Loves Company between 9:45 and 10:00.

Hmmm, breakfast event ends at 9am. 15 min drive to parking. x min to get gear together before heading up the trail. I think 10:15am - 10:30am is more realistic, for people leaving the event at 9am who aren't uphill trail runners :-D .

:-)

If anyone finds themselves up there with time to kill, waiting for others before seeking the challenge caches, http://coord.info/GC1V4JN is not too far away.
