Pipe bombs found in Frederick County

Post by littleblkdog »

No reason to think there is any current threat but wanted to share this with everybody since it has been in the news.

Pipe bombs found in Frederick County linked to man who died nearly 20 years ago.

Something to think about when searching for geocaches, you never know what might hurt you.

Also something to think about when placing geocaches, making sure that your container doesn't look suspicious, is labeled and placed with permission.

Let's be careful out there.

Pipe bombs found in Frederick County linked to man who died nearly 20 years ago

FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. - Police have determined the bomb-making materials found in Frederick County, Md., Sunday were connected to an old criminal stalking case.

An explosion led to Deputy State Fire Marshals finding a container filled with bomb-making materials and a loaded handgun in a wooded area off of Meadow Road.

Officials now say the items belonged to Alan Chmurny, who died by suicide nearly 20 years ago after being convicted of assault in a Howard County stalking case. They found a series of documents that connected the items to Chmurny, who once lived about a half-mile from the scene.

In 2000, Chmurny was charged with pouring mercury into the vents of a co-worker’s car as part of a long-term stalking case that culminated with his arrest.

The victim was not physically harmed in the incident. Upon his conviction in 2001, Chmurny ingested cyanide in open court and later died at a nearby hospital.

“We are glad that these dangerous materials were discovered and could be destroyed safely,” said State Fire Marshal Brian Geraci. “It was quite a surprise to learn they were connected to an old criminal stalking case in which a woman could have been seriously harmed.”

As the reviewer we would like to add to this conversation. When someone is hiding a cache and does not put in the note to the reviewer about what and how the cache is hidden you will get a note back from us. It will look something like this:

Hello! Thank you for your recent geocache submission.

As a general rule, Community Volunteer Reviewers check submitted caches to make sure that they meet listed guidelines. In order to do so, I need a bit more information from you.

Additional information is needed about this cache hide; please be sure to include in a Reviewer Note:

* details about the cache placement (how and where it is hidden)

* description of the cache container

* confirmation that the container is clearly marked as a geocache (if large enough)

If any of the requested information has ALREADY been provided, you do not need to provide it again. ONLY the missing information is needed. Please include the requested information in a Reviewer Note, and please be specific. It will not appear on the cache page once the geocache is published, so none of this information will be visible to seeking cachers. In the future, please including info in the form of a Reviewer Note to speed this approval process along and avoid delays such as this.

Please make all info submitted as precise and detailed as possible; the more information provided, the better. As a minimum, I like to see something like, “cache is placed in City Park in a hollow stump” or “magnetic cache is placed on lamp post”, and pictures can be included if you feel that they would be helpful. The “bottom line” is the more information provided in the cache listing and in a Reviewer Note helps to determine that the listing guidelines are being followed. Thanks for your cooperation.
