Snot Rock = actual alert

Another invasive plant has been designated by the MD DNR - I heard this on a reputable MD/DC radio station today. The plant is aquatic (algae in nature) and is called "Snot Rock"

DNR is asking fishermen (fisher persons) and anyone who wades through or comes in contact with fresh water, to clean their gear with salt water or soap after exposure to lakes and streams. Apparently it is aggressive and hardy in this area and forms dense mats of cotton-like algae on the surface - blocking the light and killing benthic organisms.

I'm sure we will be seeing "snot rock spores" mentioned in an upcoming Vinny-PUC.

P.S. - how do I change my user name? I think I may have a new favorite. I can't wait to come to the next event and introduce myself as Snot Rock.

I may have seen this stuff on saturday... Gayle and I hit a cache out on the ox bow lake in Laurel. We were crossing logs but the majority of the walk was dry. Footing wasn't great and I nearly fell into a pile of ???? looked like what you described..... snot and giant pile of it.

Snot Rock - Rock Snot - it's all bad stuff.

I had the name reversed. I did a google search on the stuff and it is pretty scary - it first was found in Canada and then was a west coast problem - but it's now in MD, having made it's way down from up north.

Check out the picture from the press release. Rock Snot looks like something a smoker coughed up. The green stuff that Hose photographed looks relatively benign in comparison.

what I saw was similar but dried up. There is alot of tall grass in the area and it is all dried up too. Pretty nasty

I found out about this stuff a few weeks ago and when I frist read about it I said to myself I hope it does not come here and I when and looked at all the stuff md DNR does not want in maryland there is a long list with lots of good info here is the website http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/invasives/ lots and lots of good info on there

Oh, so that's where Canada is. I was visualizing some nebulous northerners, noble savages if you will, deliberately mucking and snotting up our freshwater estuaries. I have a lot of Canadian friends. Wait, aren't there primitives dwelling north of that yet who haven't learned the art of nose-blowing with cotton fabric, the ones who pinch one nattering nostril closed and ....nevermind. I understand the dynamic now. They must remain north of north, but not so much so as to sully the Rio Grande from the south.

Saw a report on this last night on channel 13 I believe. It looks black and doesn't break apart to easy. They were talking like it's in the Gunpowder river. A lot of people float on inner tubes down there. Maybe it will help their buts slide over the rocks better.
